これらの食料では世界で７７億人の人口しか養うことができない。世界の人口は現在６７億人であるが２０５０年には９３億人に達すると予想されている。しかも、この食料の８０％が先進国、１３億人で消費され、人口が爆発的に増えている開発途上国には十分に渡らない。最近の１０数年、開発途上国では人口が激増するのに食料生産が追い付かず、不足する食料を輸入しようにもお金がない。アフリカ諸国などでは今も９億人が飢え続けているのである。
